Kirtipur, Kathmandu
Establishment (2016)
The IT Center at Tribhuvan University was originally established in 2016 AD.
Its initial purpose was to provide IT services that would support teaching, learning, and decision-making across TU.
Renaming to IT Innovation Centre (2021)
In 2021, the TU Executive Council officially renamed the IT Center to "Information Technology Innovation Centre (ITIC)", to reflect a broader and more forward-looking vision.
This renaming marked a shift from just providing IT infrastructure to also innovating and solving complex technological challenges within the university.
Mission and Objectives
The main objectives of ITIC include: developing ICT infrastructure at TU, acting as the central ISP (internet provider) for the university, managing TU’s data center, and providing ICT consulting.
ITIC is also responsible for managing essential services such as e-learning platforms, email systems for faculty/students, and more.
Wireless Networking Expansion
From its early days, ITIC planned a three-phase wireless networking rollout:
TU Central Office, University Campus, and Examination Controller’s Office.
Campus-level connectivity within Kathmandu Valley.
Extending wireless access to all TU campuses across Nepal.
Supercomputing (HPC)
A high-performance computing (HPC) / supercomputer (TU-HPC) is hosted under ITIC.
This HPC resource was made possible through cooperation between TU and international partners and became operational around January 2022.
Current Role & Impact
Today, ITIC is not just an IT support center; it is a strategic innovation hub within TU.
It plays a key role in providing infrastructure (data center, internet), digital platforms (e-learning, email), and supports research through HPC.
Through its operations, ITIC helps Tribhuvan University achieve its mission of modernization, digital transformation, and greater technological self-reliance.
